Let’s Talk is the latest offering from the team at Revolutions Transport Museum – a series of diverse and engaging conversations exploring objects, stories and memories.
During the Australian Heritage Festival, you'll hear from special guests and local experts about some of the curious objects held in our collection - including the Traeger radio, 1900s diving suit and 1952 Bedford shearer's truck.
Importantly, you'll get to ask the questions you’ve always wanted answers to about these objects and more! There are three talks exploring these themes and objects for you to enjoy:
- Saturday 27 April - Let's Talk: Connections by Air
- Sunday 5 May - Let's Talk: Connections by Sea
- Saturday 11 May - Let's Talk: Connections by Land
Learn how the Traeger pedal radio connected those living in remote parts of Australia to education and health services.
Members of the Northern Corridor Radio Group, based here at Whiteman Park, will share their stories and wealth of knowledge about radio communication in the first of our Let's Talk speaker series for 2024.
One of the presenters will even be 'radioing-in' to share a story about living on a station as a child: you'll hear about his experiences as one of the children who attended the School of the Air, using a Traeger pedal radio!
You’ll also be able to view a Traeger from the Whiteman Collection - a generous bequest from the late Lew Whiteman - on display in the museum.
Date | Saturday 27 April, 2024 |
Time | 2.00pm - 3.00pm |
Speakers | Steve Kennedy and Ian Wardell-Johnson |
Discover the wonders and dangers of deep-sea diving and visit our new Maritime exhibition Into the Deep Blue.
Join us for a discussion about maritime archaeology from Aurora Philpin, a diving maritime archaeologist and Assistant Curator of Maritime Heritage, at the Western Australian Museum. Aurora will talk about diving and telling stories of the human past through objects from shipwrecks and associated sites.
You’ll also be able to view maritime technology items on display in the museum, including a c.1900s diving suit from the Whiteman Collection, currently on display as part of our latest exhibit Into the Deep Blue in the foyer!
Date | Sunday 5 May, 2024 |
Time | 2.00pm - 3.00pm |
Speakers | Aurora Philpin |
About the speaker: Aurora Philpin is a diving maritime archaeologist and assistant curator of Maritime Heritage, at the Western Australian Museum. As an archaeologist, Aurora aims to unravel stories of the human past via the objects that have been left behind. A shipwreck is a time capsule, it represents a particular snapshot into the period that the ship was operating, until it met its fate at the bottom of the ocean. This snapshot can provide clues about broader past aspects of society including things like material culture and means of production during a given period. Aurora has researched ways to link unidentified shipwreck bolts back to their time of manufacture, so that these shipwreck sites and their associated stories can be identified and further understood.
Go on a cross country journey through tough terrains and discover how people travelled across our vast State.
Members of the Shearers and Pastoral Workers Social Club will share anecdotes, photographs and video clips about their lives on the road as shearers, travelling over tough terrain to connect with shearing sheds all over Western Australia.
The Shearers and Pastoral Workers Social Club gathers those who worked in the remote and rugged pastoral regions of Western Australia. Their aim is to reflect on, share and preserve their unique working experiences and culture.
The presentation will take place beside the iconic 1952 Bedford Truck in the museum, modified by Arthur Dunbar and used by the Synott & Dunbar shearing teams. This object was generously donated to Revolutions Transport Museum in 2020 by Marc Synott.
Date | Saturday 11 May, 2024 |
Time | 2.00pm - 3.00pm |
Speakers | Kevin Gellatly, Doug Kennedy and Simon Lekias |
These talks are free to attend but bookings are recommended as places are limited.
While you’re here, browse our latest exhibit Into the Deep Blue in the foyer! The exhibition features maritime objects from the Whiteman Collection - many of which have never been on public display before. Each event starts at 2.00pm, so there is plenty of time before the talk to explore the museum and exhibition.
This Let's Talk event series is offered as part of the Australian Heritage Festival.
