Government of Western Australia Whiteman Park
The Perth Electric Tramway Society are looking for volunteers to help them restore, maintain and operate vintage trams in Whiteman Park.

If you have any mechanical, carpentry or electrical skills – or even if you can just make a good cup of tea – and are free for a couple of hours on a Wednesday, then they want YOU!

Why volunteer with us?

The Perth Electric Tramway Society ("PETS") is a not-for-profit organisation of volunteer tramway enthusiasts who operate a 'living museum' as they restore, maintain and operate a fleet of vintage trams here in Whiteman Park.

This amazingly dedicated group of volunteer members operate the only electric tramway in Western Australia, maintaining four kilometres of track and overhead power supply at Whiteman Park.

By joining the Society, you'll not only be helping to preserve some of our transporting history for future generations, you'll also be providing a unique and popular public attraction in Perth. Importantly, whether you have the skills to undertake restoration and maintenance work or tram operation, research and memorabilia collation, anyone can be involved!

What kind of roles are available?

DRIVERS
Tram drivers, better known as the Motorman, are a key role needed within the PETS organisation right now. The Motorman is also supported by a Conductor, who collects fares and provides information about trams and ensures passenger safety.

ELECTRICIANS
Anyone with electrical experience who can work on motors, controllers and other equipment on the trams and in the Car Barn.

MECHANICS
Mechanical tasks include looking after the brakes, suspension and motors of the historical trams.

RESTORATION CREW
This team of passionate volunteers reconstruct the tram body shells into full operating static display condition, and ensures that operating trams are always looking smart. Skills required here include woodworking, metal work and painting.

TRAFFIC CREW
Engineers and strong volunteers who can assist with maintaining and building the tracks throughout Whiteman Park's recreation areas.

OTHER
Other skills required include administrators, cleaners and researchers.

How do I apply?

There are two ways to get in touch with the Perth Electric Tramway Society to discuss volunteering opportunities:

  1. Contact Whiteman Park’s Volunteer Coordinator on 9209 6000 or complete the Volunteer Registration Form and we’ll pass on your details to the PETS committee.
  2. Visit the Car Barn at the Mussel Pool Workshops, Whiteman Park, between 9.00am and 3.30pm any Wednesday to have a chat with the team. You can be assured of a warm welcome!
